BLURB:
Joy
marries a widowed bank executive caught in an ethical dilemma and
misreads his obvious frustration while struggling to integrate into
her new family. Inspired in part by Love, Come Softly, this novel
explores the challenges of second marriages and dealing with
step-children during the crucial years of puberty and teenage angst.
A college professor coming up shortly for the huge tenure decision,
Joy finds herself falling apart as her career and her home issues
deteriorate and collide.

Excerpt:
Joy
opened a cabinet door to gaze at the rows of hand-painted spices,
little bottles labeled in delicate, loopy cursive and decorated with
yellow daffodils, each flower unique. What kind of woman would take
the time to transfer store-bought spices into hand-crafted
containers? The same woman who painted the daffodils? As a teacher of
finance, Joy would question whether she could sell the hand-painted
jars for enough cash to compensate for the materials and labor.
In
this new universe, the question was altogether different. What was
the question? Joy felt lost.
The
jars appeared to be aligned in alphabetical order, and she checked to
be sure. Coriander seed, cumin ... tarragon, turmeric. They probably
hadn’t been used since Carolyn died. Either that, or Carolyn had
trained Ray and the girls to keep them in their proper sequence.
The
phone rang, startling Joy in the unaccustomed setting. She recognized
the voice at once. Her colleague and coauthor Natalie. Yes, the
honeymoon was wonderful, Joy told her. She elaborated on the
brilliant turquoise of the water, the amazing world she and Ray
explored together beneath the sea. She couldn’t tell Natalie the
real wonder. To be held, to be nurtured, to feel cherished for the
first time in so many years. For the first time ever by a man. She
flushed at the thought of confessing as much, at her age.
“I
haven’t forgotten our paper,” she said instead. “I know I’ve
been negligent lately. But I’ll get on it. Right away.”

The first book in a promising series, Joy After Noon is about a woman's problems when she marries a man who already has children, and she is suddenly thrown into a very difficult situation. The author does an excellent job keeping the tension high, as the heroine, Joy, discovers that secrets can tear a life apart. Joy is a likeable character. She has had no experience with men before marrying Ray, (a widower), and he takes advantage of her insecurity and innocence. In a way, he is kind, but he doesn't seem to understand Joy, and she had problems understanding the family dynamics. The book had me in suspense to find out what would happen - give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
Look great
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you do most of your writing?
ReplyDeleteI'm blessed in that I can and do write just about anywhere I happen to be. If a scene is playing out in my head, I can't wait to get something scribbled on paper before I forget. Of course it's more convenient if that scene comes to me at home where resources (computer, etc.) are available. But if I'm in a car, at church, or in a restaurant, I'll scribble on a napkin or whatever I can find. Nonetheless, in answer to your question, I probably do most of my writing at home in the living room. I like to write the old-fashioned way on a notepad first before entering it into the computer.
DeleteThanks for the giveaway; I like the cover.
ReplyDeleteA big thank-you to Jennifer for hosting and to all of you who commented or read about my new series. I'm working away on the second novel in the Sugar Sands series, which is set before the first one chronologically. It is called Song of Sugar Sands.
ReplyDeleteLove the review! I had a slightly different take on Ray, when I read the novel, although I do agree that he lacks a lot in his treatment of Joy. I'll be interested to see what other people think as they read the novel.
ReplyDeleteSounds good
ReplyDeleteThe book cover is lovely and the synopsis well-written. This sounds like a must read for me.
