Nick Bancroft Mystery Series by Bob Liter

Nick Bancroft Mystery Series
by Bob Liter

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Mystery/Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

IN THIS "GRIPPING" MYSTERY THRILLER SOMEONE TRIES TO BURN NICK BANCROFT ALIVE, BEATS HIM SENSELESS, USES HIM FOR TARGET PRACTICE AND WORST OF ALL HIS BELOVED CHICAGO CUBS DISAPPOINT HIM AGAIN! SOMETIMES A PI JUST CAN'T CATCH A BREAK! BUT WHEN HIS CLIENT IS A SEXY NUDIST, NICK BANCROFT WILL PUT UP WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING!

When a sexy nudist hires him to protect her from whoever is threatening her life, Nick Bancroft becomes the target. Someone tries to burn him alive, beats the hell out of him and, since that didn't run him off, uses him for target practice. Meanwhile, two people are murdered, Nick's true love, Maggie Atley, is more than somewhat perturbed by his relationship with his client, and a mysterious club seems to hold the answer. Nick survives an exciting but still losing season by his beloved Chicago Cubs, a vicious attack by a couple of huge dogs and eventually puts the finger on the bad guys.

Nick Bancroft Mysteries, written by Bob Liter

I'm an ex-newspaper reporter who inherited a run-down, one-man detective agency. My name is Nick Bancroft. I used to do investigation work occasionally for a friend Jimmy Jackson, who left me the business and stuck me with an office on the top floor of an old building in the wrong end of town.

I would have refused the inheritance, but I was sick of working where news had been converted to entertainment. And, besides, Jimmy had paid six months’ rent in advance for the office with a small apartment attached. Since I inherited the business I have helped solve a murder and got some press as a result.

In a small town like Centrel City, you can find bribery, graft, kickbacks, political influence peddling, criminal cover-ups, and sometimes murder. Now when I get involved in a case, there usually is a story I can sell to the upstate Chicago Times. I didn't expect to make a living as a private investigator and freelance reporter, but I was wrong ... sort of. It beats making money for someone else and it leaves time for my almost favorite sport of bowling and my passion for the Chicago Cubs.

It’s all in a day’s work; I can be tough enough when I have to be. On the other hand, I can be soft for the ladies, especially for an on-again off-again lover, Maggie Atley. Nothing is ever as it seems and I don’t quit until I find the answers. My name is Nick Bancroft.

Murder by the Book, by Bob Liter

Nick Bancroft inherits a rundown detective agency and embarks on a new career as a hard-boiled detective. When date rape drugs show up in Centrel City, so does reporter Nick Bancroft. The drugs are discovered at two different murders with sex etiquette books left at the scenes. Nick is hired by the first victim’s father, Ramsey Sinclair, to find the killer. A Chicago detective, Miss Faustine, is also hired by Mr. Sinclair to work “closely” with Bancroft. His focus is interrupted when he begins a love affair with receptionist, Maggie Atley, from a neighboring office.

Bancroft is banking on solving the murders and selling the story to the Chicago Times. As the case unfolds there is enough danger, drama, and deception to fill a book. Nick finds few things are as they seem and in his enthusiasm he becomes the target of a shooter and also the target of charming Maggie Atley’s affections.

August is Murder, by Bob Liter

A sexy nudist hires Nick Bancroft to defend her from threats on her life; Nick volunteers to provide 24-hour protection. Now, he is the target and August becomes even hotter when someone tries to burn him alive. Nick is not one to turn tail and run, especially now with two murders and Lady Godiva to protect. Nick's true love, second only to the Cubs and bowling, Maggie Atley, is more than somewhat perturbed by the arrangement with his beautiful client.
After weeks of investigation there are still unanswered questions. Who are the bad guys? What does a mysterious club have to do with the murders? Can Nick survive another losing season by his beloved Chicago Cubs? Is this the last inning for Nick and Maggie?

Death Sting, by Bob Liter

After an intimate breakfast together, while reading the paper to Maggie, Nick is baffled by a headline: Female Body Found Covered with Stings: The Sheriff Calls the Death an Accident. Free-lance reporter and private detective, Nick Bancroft, doesn’t believe it and is drawn to the case like a bee to honey. He learns the victim lived in a home for young unwed mothers who work as waitresses and hookers at a nightclub.

Murder suspects include an alcoholic handy man, the man and wife who operate the home, a nightclub operator and his henchman, and a sheriff's deputy. Everyone is trying to stop Nick’s investigation, including federal agents.

Even when he and his earthy lover Maggie survive being dumped in a deep lake with weights tied to their ankles, Bancroft is unwavering in his pursuit of the truth. Will Maggie and Nick’s romance sink or swim before the case is solved?

Point of Murder, by Bob Liter

Nick Bancroft, a former investigative reporter, enjoys a mundane existence in Centrel City operating a one-man detective agency. He supplements his pauper’s wages selling news stories to the Chicago Times. In a small apartment, Nick and his roommate Maggie, share frivolous romantic lovemaking and the responsibility of feeding a stray cat that adopted them. On the surface it seems picture-perfect.
The bed of roses ends abruptly when Nick’s destitute young friend, Bobby Scalf, is found murdered with a blunt six inch spike in his head. Nick becomes a suspect when the second murder victim is discovered in the abandoned building where the boy lived.

While Nick tries to find out who killed the boy, he uncovers a web of corruption involving the town council, the school board, the police chief and the local newspaper publisher. Nick survives several attempts on his life, and that of his stormy lover, before nailing the killer and exposing the town's secrets. Solving the town’s problems may not be enough to solve the problems festering between Maggie and Nick. Is it really over?

And the Band Played On, by Bob Liter

Freelance reporter and sometime private detective, Nick Bancroft, is tough enough when he has to be. On the other hand, he can be soft for the ladies. That's how he ends up at an outdoor band concert, with Maggie, a librarian, divorcee, and his very talented lover. Nick is front row center to witness the murder of a well-connected private secretary of an important political figure.

It doesn't earn him any points with the cops that he is on the scene before them, and it doesn't earn him any points with certain influential politicians that he won't get off the case. Not only is Nick drawn into the dirty details of the crime, someone is trying to kill him. During the investigation, Maggie and Nick come face to face with the events surrounding 9-11. Will the final case break their spirits and crumble their love, or will they emerge stronger and committed to life together?

Excerpt :

August is Murder, A Nick Bancroft Mystery

The first time they tried to kill me I was asleep. My office and apartment were on the third floor of a nearly abandoned building. My own coughing jarred me awake. I rolled to a sitting position from the sweat-wet bedding and continued choking on hot, acrid air. The sweat was no surprise. My air conditioner had quit. But this was more than August heat in Centrel City, Illinois.

A flip of the light switch near my bed did nothing to alleviate the darkness. I went to hands and knees and felt around until I found my pants and shoes, sat against the bed, squirmed into the jeans. Heat from the floor threatened to roast my rump.

"Don't panic, Nick," I said aloud. Should I try to save anything or just get the hell out? My files, I had to save my case files. I crawled into the office, stood, and pulled out the top drawer. I felt my way to the office door and opened it. A swish of even hotter air swept against my face.

What about Maggie? She might be in the office on the second floor. It was well past midnight. Why would she be there? I assured myself she was not. She was the reason why I now had a stray cat and a cracked heart. What about the cat? Any cat that came and went when the office door was locked wouldn't be trapped in that old building.

It is my honor to introduce new readers to the Bancroft Mysteries where the character Nick Bancroft has an uncanny resemblance to my Dad, Bob Liter with his wit and bodacious gutsy approach to life. Then there is Nick’s on-again off-again lady, Maggie Atley, who is just like Mom, Lillian Liter, in the way she deals with a self-proclaimed “male chauvinist piggy.”

While Nick solves mysteries in the fictitious, but very real, community of Central City, IL he still finds time for his love-hate relationship with bowling, and his avid undying passion for the Chicago Cubs and Bears.

Read an Excerpt

I always knew it would be me.

Don’t ask me to explain how I knew—I won’t be able to.

As far back as I can remember, there was talk of colonizing outer space. I didn’t grow up freaked out by the idea. Maybe I should have—my parents were.

The year I was born, the United States celebrated its one hundredth anniversary of the successful establishment of a colony on the moon. Venturing into outer space was never foreign to me; it never carried fear the way it did for the adults around me. I learned about the solar system in school like every kid through the generations…but I also facetimed with the scientists stationed at headquarters and had a third-grade pen pal who lived on the moon.

But that was when Earth was only thought to be dying…before scientists put an expiration date on Earth’s existence. That news changed everything: disbelief melted into panic, which boiled to cold-blooded terror when the drafts were instated.

But maybe I’m getting ahead of myself. I forget that not everyone is fluent in space-talk; that my everyday reality is startling to some. My mom in particular reminds me of this all the time. She accuses me of being intentionally abrupt just so I can elicit shocked reactions from people around me.

It isn’t true. I just don’t see the point in sugarcoating situations.

About the Author:
Alyssa Huckleberry grew up in San Diego as the oldest of four children. After earning a business degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Alyssa spent a short time working in finance before transitioning to work in education. Today Alyssa works as a fifth grade teacher and she LOVES her job!

When she isn't teaching or writing, you can find Alyssa running, reading, practicing yoga, traveling the world, or spending time with those dearest to her. She loves spending time outdoors, growing in her faith, and learning new things (hence, the great amount of time spent reading, traveling, and going on adventures!). A true lover of whimsy, she also believes everything is better with a latte in hand.

Alyssa's first novel, Rescuing Racei, was published in 2004 (while Alyssa was still a high school student) and later won the San Diego Book Award for Best Young Adult Novel. Since then, Alyssa published three other books to complete the series: Stealing Splendiferous, Magicus, and The Maleku Map.

The Struggle is Real was an inspired piece written for an adult audience as a stand-alone work. Her latest novel, Dark Matter, is written for a young adult audience. It is the first book in what will be a science-fiction series imagining a future of space exploration!

GENRE: Sci-Fy Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blurb: She wants her world back; he wants her heart.
Tilly Morgan and her four-legged companion, Kodiak, are just trying to survive the alien arrival. Two years ago, the visitors unleashed devastation—a world-wide EMP followed by a deadly virus that wiped out more than half of humanity.
Traversing the lonely landscape, she runs into an alien on patrol with one order: eradicate all human life. A mysterious, dark-haired stranger named Jareth comes to her aid, and she reluctantly allows him to join her quest to find her sister. He even persuades her to let the damaged alien tag along against her better judgment.
As her group travels the desolate world and inches closer to her goal, she’s forced to examine her unwanted feelings for Jareth and come to terms with her heart, even if the truth threatens to destroy her and everything she’s come to believe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Walking down a long, metallic corridor, the hall opens, and I see people sitting at terminals or standing on discs.

Visual readouts project holographic images at the stations. Some of the crew wear visors over their eyes and move gloved hands to swipe at virtual images of the triangular ship and the solar system. When Eva passes their stations, several follow the procession with guarded faces.

The back of a chair rests in the middle of the spacious room. Before the seat is an enormous window that looks out into space.

One soft, polished boot dangles over the side of the chair. Long, deft fingers drum a beat on the black coat that covers the knee.

Freaking, evil granny. I should’ve known she wouldn’t keep her nose out of my business.

In slow motion, the chair swivels in my direction.

I want to crawl and hide. Instead, I stand and stare like the idiot I am.

Author Interview!

Hello and welcome to my blog! Can you tell me a little about yourself, and how you became an author?

Thanks for having me on your blog!. I’m married and have one daughter. I dabbled in writing as a teen but didn’t seriously start it again until two or three years ago.

On a whim, in early 2019, I decided to submit a few chapters of a story I’d recently written, hoping an editor would take pity on me and give some valuable feedback. To my shock, I received a full manuscript request, and a month later, I was offered a contract by DLG Publishing Partners. My poor editor—she had her work cut out by teaching me the ropes. Hahaha.

What is your book about?

The Descendant follows a twenty-year-old woman named Tilly Morgan. It’s in first-person present tense, so the reader sees everything through her eyes. Humanity and the world’s electrical grid and electronics have been wiped out by mysterious aliens, and she’s one of the few survivors.

Lonely, she hopes her sister is also immune to the virus and begins a quest toward Florida, hoping to either find her sister or say a final goodbye. On the way, a lovable mutt named Kodiak adopts Tilly, then she meets a handsome, charismatic stranger named Jareth. The story focuses on Tilly and Jareth, showing two completely different personalities trying to survive in the aftermath of the apocalypse. Lots of readers love the twists and turns the story takes, too.

Who is your heroine? Is she based on someone in real life?

Tilly is the protagonist. She’s not exactly a hero, but she’s a strong female lead. I don’t know who she’s like. I see a lot of myself in her, so perhaps she’s my alter ego. She’s a headstrong little scrapper with a dirty mouth, so yeah, the more I think about it, the more I’m pretty sure I know where she came from. Ha.

What are your favorite times for writing? Morning? Evening?

I love mornings, but I usually write in the evening because I work a daytime job.

Who are your favorite authors? Did they influence your writing, and if so, how?

Stephen King, Robert Jordan, Veronica Roth, Laura Thalassa, and so many more. Yes, I’m sure they influence my writing, but no one’s ever mentioned my books reminding them of another author, so I guess that’s a good thing. I definitely want to have my own writing voice.

Did you have a favorite book as a child? Did it influence your choice to become an author?

My favorite books, when I first got into reading around ten or so, were the Choose Your Own Adventures stories and a series called The Unicorn Queen, or something like that. After those, I graduated to Christopher Pike and read everything he released until I leveled up to Stephen King.

I’m sure they influenced me into becoming an author because those stories instilled my love for the written word.

Among the Pages by Sara R. Turnquist

Among the Pages

by Sara R. Turnquist

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance (sweet)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A woman’s choice…is in question.

Brianne is a somewhat naïve college freshman. She becomes disillusioned as her professors and peers challenge many of her long-held beliefs. When she finds a diary that belonged to a distant relative, she hopes it will offer much needed distraction. And she is soon drawn into the story of a passionate woman who seems to whisper from the past.

In 1915’s New York, idealist and primary teacher Margaret struggles with the problems women face at home and in society. She is first timid about speaking her mind, but in time cannot keep her impassioned spirit hidden—not even from the gentleman who teaches in the classroom next door. His concern for her stretches the limits of their friendship, pressing into something more. Caught up in the Women’s Suffrage Movement, she faces down authority figures and others who question her beliefs.

And so, Brianne is whisked along on this journey as Margaret joins the fight for women’s rights, all the while trying to work through her own questions and experiences with modern feminism.

Before long, things spin out of control and she wonders where her newfound relationship fits into everything? Are there any clear answers? Will she land on her feet? Or be forever lost to herself?

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt :
HISTORICAL TIME PERIOD – Margaret attends a speech/rally
And they say we cannot gather and not speak of the vote. What exactly shall be their reasoning for not permitting us the vote? The lack of education from whence they first deprived us? This, and their own insistence that we are not knowledgeable about the workings of the government, politics, and society? And why should we not be? Because we are consigned to the home.”
The crowd murmured in agreement as the speaker continued driving her points.
Margaret nodded along, lost in the speech.
Voices in the crowd grew more aggressive. And progressively louder.
Margaret glanced around, her gaze shifting from one side to the other.
People around pressed in toward the speaker.
Margaret’s heart squeezed. This could not be good. It would not end well. She scanned the faces nearby. So many. All caught up in emotions provoked by the speaker’s words.
What would happen? This could not escape the notice of others. Of those who would oppose…
She swallowed. Hard. Her breaths came rapidly as she thought about the gathering being moved upon.
Jerking her head from side to side, she spotted an opening in the bodies around her. She slipped through and moved farther away from the group.
And once she deemed herself at a safe distance, she took notice of the onlookers. Their disapproving glares stabbed at her.
Dare she defend the women? The speaker?
Her hands shook. And her heart raced.
She just…couldn’t. So she shrunk back across the street and watched from an even greater distance.
Moments later, hoof beats clomped on the pavement.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Police swept down upon the gathering. Had they come to break up the meeting or intimidate?
She didn't stay to find out. Shrinking farther into the approaching darkness, she slipped into anonymity.
In book one of Permanent Hangover, all Finn Gardner wanted was a breath of fresh air when he stepped into the alley behind the Permanent Hangover Bar and Tattoo Parlor. At first sight, he’d thought it was just another homeless person to shoo away from the building. Instead, he found someone who needed help - his help. Having been given a second chance himself, Finn believes in paying it forward. The Hangover has taken more than one lost soul in over the years.
Bailey Parson needed to get away. She left her life in Chicago behind and escaped to St. Paul, but she never once thought far enough ahead to what her next step would be when she arrived there. To her, what she was running from was much more to worry about than some half-baked plan. After a month stuck on the streets, a new need arose, as the temperature started to drop - survival.
Given a chance by a stranger, Bailey works to find her way. Not only winning over customers and the staff with her smart wit and empathy, she wins over the standoffish tattoo artist. Keeping their relationship forward focused, Finn hoped to avoid both of their baggage. However, when Bailey’s past threatens to destroy everything they built together, Finn’s left with decisions to make.
Does he give up the beautiful curvy woman, the only one whose touch calms him? How much of his dark past would he need to unlock to save her? A past with the potential to destroy what they have together. More importantly, can the lovers turn the scars of the past into a design strong enough to see them through any challenge? Or, will the permanent ink leave them with open wounds and no chance of healing?
“How you know her?” Cain asked.
“Didn’t you hear, he plucked her from the trash and begged Alice to hire her,” Mick said as he continued to change ‘sweet Tina’ to ‘sweet titties.’ Along with the body of a woman to match.
“It wasn’t like that.”
“You know why he knows what she’s wearing?” Mick goaded.
“Not again?” Cain moaned. “Seriously, dude, are you a fan of buying flat screens?”
“I didn’t let her stay with me,” Finn growled in reference to his last female roommate who cleaned him out before taking off.
“No, this jackass is letting her stay, rent-free in the upper apartment.”
“It was empty,” Finn said. “All she has is a shitty mattress left by the last tenant.”
“Tell the truth,” Joey said as he joined the conversation. “You gonna get her on welfare, then section eight your duplex. That would make sense. She gives you like eight dollars, but you get two grand.”
“My whole plan is to manipulate the system,” his droll response had all the enthusiasm of a drunk regretting decisions the morning after.
“Work it, or it’ll work you,” Mick said. “Seen it a million times before.”
“If you hear thumping on your ceiling tonight know I took her home,” Cain said with a broad smile. The mahogany skinned man crossed his arms. Covered in black ink from all the artists currently renting space as well as a few others.
“What will you be doing?” Joey laughed. “Stomping on roaches in Finn’s rat trap of a slum? Seriously, dude, in what world has that place not been condemned?”
“It’s historic,” Finn replied as he waved over his next client.
Spanning over 200 years of American military history, “The Wars Among the Paines” (Koehler Books, September 30, 2020), tells the complex story of a family defined by war, accounting in vivid detail its toll in blood, treasure, and emotional turmoil. Nearly 50 years in the making, “The Wars Among the Paines” is the debut novel by Vietnam veteran John M. Millar, who tells a story that illustrates how the consequences of America's foreign wars escape the boundaries of the front lines, and ripple through generations of families, friends, politics, and the lives of we the people.
THOMAS PINKERTON PAINE JOINS THE FIRST DIVISION—APRIL 1918
“OVER THERE”—George M. Cohan
Thomas left on a troopship for France. He stayed on deck the entire time, except for meals, to minimize his contact in a closely packed ship. One of his goals was to return to his family by avoiding the diseases so easily contracted in war zones. He arrived in St. Nazaire, France, and was rapidly transported in a second-class passenger coach, while enlisted men rode in boxcars.
Thomas arrived at the front at a time that the First Division was the only fully trained American division in France. They had already lost a disproportionate number of junior officers in their first operational missions. Thomas was immediately assigned as a platoon leader in the 1/26th. He had been in France for less than one month, but he was about to engage in his first combat mission. The mission was to capture the town of Cantigny and the surrounding high ground.
On May 27, 1918, the division moved into its attack positions, and the next morning commenced their attack on the German positions in and around Cantigny. As the First Division advanced, German machine-gunners delivered heavy fire, killing three officers in Company A. The advance halted, while the advance party was pinned down. Until the machine guns were taken out, the First Division could not move. Second Lt. Paine gathered five volunteers, all armed with automatic rifles and grenades.
Thomas had this exact tactical problem while he trained in Ithaca. He had his remaining men deliver heavy fire on the machine gun positions, while his team pulled back and circled the Germans’ flank. They advanced slowly, then charged the bunkers, using their grenades first. When the grenades flushed out those who were not dead, the men fired their automatic rifles, killing the rest of the gunners and their support. Thomas’ and his men’s heroism would be recognized after the battle—if they were still alive.
“Call and cancel,” he said. “I’ve got a suite for us at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort. It’s up in the hills not far from Fort Carson.” Apparently she hadn’t figured out that separate hotel rooms weren’t an option. People had been shooting at her. He wasn’t letting her get that far away.
“It’s an hour drive from there to the Depot,” he said, opening the passenger door. “But we’ll also be spending time at the base, which is fairly close, so we might as well stay somewhere nice.”
“You’re spending a lot of money. I didn’t expect that. I’ll find a way to repay you.”
He stopped walking and turned back. “I told you before--I owe your brother my life. You don’t owe me anything and especially not money. I’ve got plenty of it, far more than we’ll need.” He stared down at her. “All right?”
She shrugged. “I guess so.” She was a foot shorter than he was, petite, with a trim figure, but she wasn’t frail. He usually went for tall, buxom women. They just seemed less fragile, a better fit for a guy his size. But there was something about Jessie that drew him.
“No more talk about money,” he said to make the point. “Okay?”
Her chin went up. “Fine.”
He bit back a smile. She was really cute. Too bad she didn’t look more like her silver-haired father and less like her brother, whose good-looks appealed to women around the world.
They belted themselves into their seats and he started the engine.
“You don’t want to talk about the money you’re spending,” she said. “So what do you want to talk about? The case, I hope.”
He grinned. “Why don’t we talk about why you don’t have a serious boyfriend. That should be interesting.”
Instead of the snarky remark he expected, Jessie’s face went pale. She glanced out the window. “It’s not a good story.”
