Warlord
by
Miriam Newman
GENRE:
Historical Fantasy Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Given
to a famous old warlord to seal a treaty between two tribes, Ganina
is a young girl with love to give. But Atulfa is old enough to be her
grandfather. Then Atulfa and his oldest son die under mysterious
circumstances and it is rumored that a younger son, Senec, has
arranged their deaths.
Left
without the old man’s protection, Ganina is fodder for the vicious
torment of his other wives. She has no choice but to cast her lot
with Senec.
Whatever
he is, he is the new warlord and she is now at his mercy.
EXCERPT:
They had
shrouded him in blankets against the falling snow and for a moment
she thought possibly he was dead, but no one stopped her as she
lifted back a corner of one blanket. Not dead, then. Senec squinted
up at her through flakes drifting down, said her name, and then
closed his eyes again.
Men were
swarming around her then—Ifelsten’s men. He had known when he saw
her run to the litter where Senec was and responded at once. The
Westenians had long experience dealing with the wounded and traded
off expertly with the Covetian riders, working poles through the
sides of the blanket to lift her husband free.
“Take
him to my quarters,” she instructed, asserting privilege. But it
was the logical spot and no one argued. She noted in passing that
Ifelsten was standing beside her father’s horse, both of them
heavily engaged in conversation with the aid of someone who
understood them. But she was busy directing the men carrying Senec to
her rooms, with Pytor hurrying beside her. He had attended their
wounded many times.
“Roll
him on his side,” he told the men. “Carefully. Now roll the
blankets up to his back. Good. Roll him back the other way. Now
pull.”
They
extricated Senec like a caterpillar out of its cocoon, but he had not
stirred. Behind her, Ganina heard heavy booted footsteps and look up
from her husband only long enough to see her father with Ifelsten.
“What
happened?” she demanded.
Fantasy
poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as
I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance
writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a
lifelong addiction to horses, an 18 year career in various areas of
psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I
nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy
romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and
historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a
“motley crew” of rescue animals. You can see my books at
ReplyDeleteI appreciate getting to hear about a new book. Thanks so much for taking time to share.
ReplyDeleteAnd I enjoy writing them! Thanks, James.
DeleteSounds like a good read.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rita, and good luck in the drawing.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to see my first 5-star review for this book today. Here is a snippet: "Ms. Newman's words are magical, and her storytelling is captivating. Highly recommended!" Available as a ebook or in print at Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting here today, Jennifer. I love your span of books across the top of the blog, very interested. I am a history freak and my muse is named Persephone. Yes, I gave her a name. She has quite a story of her own. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWho was your favorite character to write for?
ReplyDeleteOne of my first books, Book I of The Chronicles of Alcinia called The King's Daughter, was historical fantasy romance. The male protagonist was a mad general who most closely resembled an ancient Roman commander. That guy took every one of my 18 years as a psychiatric social worker to construct. I loved him...madly. Still do.
DeleteEPIC cover! What authors do you enjoy reading?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Caryl. I love any of the good historical authors. Philippa Gregory comes right to mind. I loved Outlander, Game of Thrones, Ken Follett is good for me, too. I love Lyndsey Townsend's books, she's an auto-buy for me.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely in love with this gorgeous cover!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mya. That was designed by Lynn Hubbard.
