A Thorned Rose in the Sand by Lea Bronsen

Hi, and thank you for hosting me on your blog!

Hi Lea, can you tell me about your book, and where you got the idea?

 I got the idea for this story after watching a video of French “globe cooker” Fred Chesneau visiting nomads in the Moroccan desert. They generously shared their food, home, and wisdom with a stranger, and I thought it would be cool to write about a female rally driver having the same experience. A Thorned Rose in the Sand is set in the beautiful, quiet dunes of western Sahara where the sun is so hot you can’t walk barefooted and you could go miles and miles without seeing a single soul. In this story, you’ll meet a badass 450cc rally motorcycle, an opiniated but gentle dromedary, and two highly strong-willed young persons from opposite sides of the planet who get off to a bad start then can’t keep their hands off each other 😊

Genre: Erotic romance
When life in a big U.S. city becomes too much, Stevie Jones decides to live her wildest dream – compete against the tough guys in a motorcycle rally across Morocco. But the real excitement is found away from the race track, in the shifting sands of the desert. After his studies in London, Ragab has returned to the nomadic lifestyle of his Bedouin family and the majestic silence of the Sahara. He dreams of the perfect wife, until a beautiful but feisty biker stuck in a sand dune turns his quiet world upside down.

Excerpt

The girl screamed behind him. “Eeeeee!” Too hard to resist. Until now, Ragab had had a difficult time respecting her privacy, but surely, a scream called for attention. What kind of a gentleman would he be if he didn’t check on a woman in distress? He spun and found her kneeling on her jacket, nude and wet, arms outstretched in shock. He bit down a laugh. Yes, the deep well water was cold, but one got used to it, and in the extreme heat of the desert, it was a blessing. She turned, caught him staring, and even though he couldn’t see anything inappropriate, she hurried to cover her breasts and pubic area. “Look away!” she shouted, voice panicky. The laugh bubbled inside him, but he obediently turned back to the motorcycle—then stood in such a way he could see her reflection in one of the side mirrors.

When her abusive lover tries to take custody of her baby, Audra flees where even he can’t follow: the aliens’ forbidden cities underneath Kwadra Island.

But can the safety she wants for her daughter survive a search party, violent alien criminals—and the love of an emotionally damaged Kwadran?

Read an Excerpt:

The rebels came out of hiding and stalked toward the good guys.

But fifty feet behind them, rolled black cleaning bots in a solid phalanx from one side of the lane to the other. More were emerging from doors to fall in behind the first line.

Tal’s chest felt light. His fists clenched and unclenched rapidly. This was more cleaning bots than had ever been assembled. “Hurry up,” he said to his army even though they couldn’t hear him. “Faster.”

The line rolled toward the rebels’ rear, charging like phalanx of vengeful cockroaches determined to advance no matter what stood in their way.

Maybe because of the gunshots, the rebels didn’t hear the miniature army. Two guys and a woman in the rear yelped when bots hit their feet. Dropping their weapons, the men fell backward; there were so many bots that they carried them and their guns along for a bumpy, jarring ride. The woman was faster. She dashed into a nearby house—but came right back out again, pushed by a battalion of cleaning machines.

Scores of bots flooded into the lane, driving rebels out of buildings and into the churning flood of small metal soldiers. Some tried to crawl over the flood, but they found nothing stable enough to walk on. They fell and bots crawled over them. A rebel emptied his pistol at the swarm, but for every one he shot, another took its place.

One young rebel, smarter than the rest, rode atop the bots without struggling. At an intersection he rolled once, twice, three times until he reached the edge of the swarm. Then he popped to his feet. His escape didn’t matter, though: he left his gun and ran.

A GIRL OF WHITE WINTER by Barb Hendee

A GIRL OF WHITE WINTER
A Dark Glass Novel Book #3

by Barb Hendee
Genre: Historical Fantasy

Pub Date: 8/7/2018

Kara, as a ward with no parentage and no future, has been raised knowing nothing outside her lady’s chambers. Until Royce Capello, a visiting nobleman, is struck by her ice-pale looks, and demands her as payment for the land the family needs.
With barely time to protest, Kara is sold and packed off for a life as a concubine—until a raiding party descends on Royce’s company and she’s kidnapped for the second time in as many days.
Whatever happens, Kara will be alone in the world, inexperienced and fearing even the vast unfamiliar sky. But one raider gives her a choice—and a magic mirror appears to show her where each path will lead…
She can leave with her protector Raven and journey with his performing troupe, competing for his mercurial affections.
She can flee the raiders’ settlement, and return to Royce’s manor, chattel among devious nobility.
Or she can stay in the settlement, bound to firm, silent Caine, who is as gentle as he is staid and inscrutable.
Her fates twist and turn to affect far more than she could have guessed, tangling the bitter with the sweet—and Kara must choose which consequences she can live with…

A CHOICE OF CROWNS
A Dark Glass Novel Book #2

Olivia Geroux knew her king was reluctant to marry her, whatever the negotiations had arranged. But she never expected to find handsome, arrogant King Rowan obsessed with his stepsister instead. And before she can determine what course to take, she overhears her greatest ally plotting to murder the princess.
Olivia must act quickly—and live with whatever chaos results. As the assassin hunts his prey, a magic mirror appears to show Olivia the three paths that open before her . . .
If she hesitates only a moment, the princess will die—and she will become queen.
If she calls for help, she will gain great power—but she must also thrust away her own happiness.
If she runs to stop the murder herself, she will know love and contentment—but her whole country will suffer.
As she lives out each path, her wits and courage will be tested as she fights to protect her people, her friends, and her heart. And deciding which to follow will be far from easy . . .

THROUGH A DARK GLASS
A Dark Glass Novel Book 1

On her seventeenth birthday, Megan of Chaumont discovers she’ll be sold as a bride to the brutish Volodane family—within hours. Her father grants only that she may choose which one of the ruthless, grasping lord's three sons she weds:
Rolf, the eldest: stern, ambitious, and loyal?
Sebastian, the second son: sympathetic, sly, and rebellious?
Or Kai, the youngest: bitter, brooding, and proud?
As shy, horrified Megan flees the welcome dinner for her in-laws-to-be, she finds an enchanted mirror that will display how her life unrolls with each man, as if she were living it out in a breath. But there is no smooth “happily ever after” in her choices.
Deaths and honors, joys and agonies, intrigues and escapes await her in a remote, ramshackle keep, where these rough but complex men reveal one side and then another of their jagged characters—and bring forth new aspects of Megan, too. But the decisions of one teenaged marriage-pawn reverberate much farther than any of them have guessed . . .

I read "A Girl of White Winter", and now I want to read the whole series!
The book starts off with Kara, a lovely but incredibly sheltered young woman who is the ward of a wealthy couple, Giselle and Jean de Marco. In fact, she is the bastard daughter of Giselle's brother, a worthless rake who slept with Giselle's maid and then left her when she became pregnant. Giselle, who always wanted a daughter, raised Kara as her ward, never breathing a word about her true parentage. Until one evening, Royce, a young nobleman comes to dinner, sees Kara, and decides he wants her for his own. He easily persuades Jean de Marco to sell Kara to him - despite Giselle's protests. And Kara is swept away the next morning, to become a rich man's mistress. Except things don't turn out quite as planned. Highway men raid them, and steal not only their money, but Kara is stolen as well - she has caught the eye of the raider, who brings her to their hideout, where the whole raider community lives. There, she is given a choice. She can stay with her raptor, Caine, or leave with his brother, Raven - or they will let her go - and she can fiind her way back home, where she will end up once again with Royce, the man who bought her.
The magic mirror shows her the results of the three choices - and in the end, she musst decide.
It was interesting to see the results of her choices - the story was fast-moving and the characters well defined, so there was no confusion anywhere. The choice Kara made was not, perhaps, the choice this reader expected, but it made for a satisfactory ending. I would definitely recommend this book - I had fun reading it and trying to guess what Kara would do - or what I would have done in her shoes!

"A Choice of Crowns": The second book in the series didn't disappoint either. Olivia has an impossible choice - and the three futures she sees all have good and bad points. I loved the characters in this book - especially Olivia. Her upbringing is fascinating and her choice is heartbreaking. I loved this book as much as the first one!

"Through a Glass Darkly": In this book, a seemingly banal choice results in tragedy. No matter what Megan chooses, it seems there will be immense suffering. I was really rooting for the heroine to have a happy ending - and as usual, the author gives the reader twists, turns, and surprises. I think this was my favorite book of the three, but I highly reccommend all! Don't miss this fascinating series!

  From "A Girl of White Winter":
Crouched in a corner, in the darkness, I sat with my arms wrapped around my knees, longing for someone to come and fearing someone would come. The night was cold, and even in my cloak, I’d begun to shiver when a familiar voice sounded out back.
“Put down the tray and unbolt the door. I’ll take it in myself.”
Raven.
Relief flooded through me. I didn’t know him any more than I knew Caine, but he had talked to me more, and last night, he’d made me a private bed up on the wagon.
The door opened, and moonlight filtered in. Raven stood there with an armload of firewood. I never saw who was with him because he turned his head and said, “Go home. I can manage from here.”
Striding in, he glanced at me once before walking to the hearth and arranging the logs. A flint appeared in his hand, and he used it to build a fire. I was even more grateful for the light than the heat.
Once the flames had taken, he went back to the door and returned with a wooden tray. A savory scent wafted upward as he knelt in front of me.
The tray contained a bowl, a spoon, and a tin cup.
“Vegetable stew with gravy,” he said. “Go ahead and eat. I know you’re hungry.”
I was famished, but Lady Giselle had always impressed the importance not showing any rush when eating. It was the height of poor manners.
“Thank you,” I whispered, reaching slowly and picking up the bowl, taking a small bite of potato. Then I took a sip of water from the cup.
He watched me.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
His unexpected apology made me brave. “What does Caine want with me?”
“I don’t know. I’ve asked him, but he won’t tell me. He’s speaking to our grandfather now.”
I’d heard the word “grandfather” from one or both of them before. “Is Caine your brother?”
Raven nodded. “So is Logan. He’s the eldest. I’m the youngest.”
Absorbing this news, I took another small bite and swallowed it. “Caine called me his property.”
“I know he did. I heard him.” He studied my face. “But you don’t need to worry. He won’t sell you, and he won’t hurt you. I promise.”
“Why did he bring me here?”
Raven hesitated. “I told you I don’t know…but Caine is a man who believes in fate and in prophecies.”
“And you don’t?”
“I believe in choices.” He stood up. “And I don’t like this. I don’t like you being locked in here, and I don’t like you losing control over your own decisions.”
His words washed over me. I’d never heard anyone talk like this before. I’d never thought about having choices.
He crouched again. “My people all used to be travelers. We traveled the kingdoms as we pleased, never settling anywhere, but that life grew hard for some of us, and my grandfather founded this place. The location makes it safe, and some of us, like Logan and Caine, prefer to grow food and live here year-round.” Tilting his head, he added, “But some of us don’t.”
“What do you mean?”
“I have a troupe who travels with me from village to town, putting on shows to earn money, living as we please. We come back here in autumn so I can help with some of the raiding parties. Then we leave for a few months and come here again for the hard part of winter.”
I wanted to ask more about the term “raiding parties” but had a feeling he was trying to convey something more important.
“My troupe leaves in the morning,” he said.
For some reason, this news brought a fresh wave of fear. He was the only one who really talked to me. And he was leaving in the morning? Standing up again, he walked to the door.
“But for now, I’m going to head back to the common house and see how Grandfather is faring with Caine.” He paused. “I’m not going to lock the door.”
Setting down the bowl, I stood as well. Firelight reflected off the side of his face.
“The way I see it,” he went on, “you have three options. While everyone is distracted, you could slip out of here tonight. No one guards the mouth of the chute. On foot, in the dark, you could press close to the near wall of the chute and make your way down with no one up above on watch seeing you.”
My breaths quickened in fear at the thought of trying to flee this place and make it back to de Marco lands, to my lady, on my own.
“Or,” he said. “You can stay here and take your chances and find out what Caine wants.”
“Or?” I whispered.
“Or…you could come on the road with me.” He amended quickly. “I mean with us, with my troupe. You’d belong to yourself, but you could travel with us.”
A wild rush of hope rose up. “Could you take me home, to the de Marco manor?”
“No. Only small raiding groups of men ever go north into those estate lands. I won’t risk any of my people. We’re heading east. If you want to go back, you’re on your own.”
Despair replaced hope. His refusal had been swift and final.
But another thought occurred. “I couldn’t go with you if I wished to. Caine would never allow it.”
“He would if I asked him. He owes me…or thinks he does. I’ve never asked him for anything, but I’d ask him for this, and he wouldn’t refuse.”
I was moved that Raven would use up a favor to help me, but I also feared the prospect of joining a troupe of strangers traveling east, farther from my home.
He watched me a few moments longer.
“Choices are all that matter in this life,” he said. “And we have to be free to make our own. You think on this, and I’ll be back before dawn. If you’re gone, I’ll know you chose to run. If you’re here, you can tell me what you’ve decided.” He walked out. “I won’t lock the door.”
But he closed it.
I was alone again.

Baby Love by Latiera N. Ford

Baby Love
by Latiera N. Ford
Genre: YA Coming of Age

Love is a little girl who faces a number of challenges between her school and her home. We all can relate to the pressures of not being accepted by our peers,sibling rivalry, lost relationships and the struggle to find love through it all. While directly pin pointing these important issues, Baby Love serves as an open call for awareness that can hopefully bring us one step closer to making a positive change in the lives of all children.
This book is a must read for young adults ranging from age 13 years and older. Baby Love tells a story of issues that arise for young children that include bullying, issues with family, and it also teaches lessons on self love, acceptance, and kindness to one others.

 Mrs. Trotter enters the classroom abruptly as she addresses the behavior of her students. “In my class, it is important that you not only learn the value of reading but the value of relationships. Since we are all getting acquainted with one another, I think it is fair to say we need more time to learn what great things we all have to offer. I know there is good in each one of you, but I could not tell from the terrible display of behavior I just witnessed. It deeply saddens me that you would treat one of your classmates this way. Now, we will do an activity, so we can all learn the importance of being nice to one another. First, I want everyone to start by apologizing to Love.
Love smiles shyly as she stands before the class.
The group of students says in unison, "I'm sorry, Love."
“Thank you,” Love says quietly as she takes the short path that leads to her desk. She is glad to finally sit in her seat.
Mrs. Trotter continues, “Next, I want you to say one nice thing about the person sitting next to you. Tia, since you are in the front, we will start with you and go across the row to each person until we reach the back. Michael, since you are the last person in the back of the class, you will say something nice about Tia.”

Latiera Ford is a career HR Professional turned Author and Entrepreneur. Born and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago, IL., she has always taken pride in hard work and dedication.
Through news outlets, social media, family, and friends she noticed a lack of sensitivity that children have today. This has led to an increase in bullying, lack of positive self-image and acceptance, as well as family issues. Upon discovering this powerful message that needed to be addressed she decided to self-publish her first book entitled Baby Love. This book provides children from ages 13 and up with a straight forward approach to some of today’s most pressing issues. While tackling the aforementioned issues plaguing some of our youth, it also provides a direct approach on how they can be handled, while also teaching lessons of love and kindness. Unlike the normal cookie cutter children’s stories, this book is also honest to the core with some of the real issues that exist within families across America.
Baby Love has proven to be a strong book for this Chicago Native, and is destined to continue making waves throughout the literary scene. While promoting this project, Latiera is currently in Atlanta looking to further expand her brand through speaking engagements, press, school, vendor events and more!

Cloaked by Taylor Hobbs

CLOAKED by TAYLOR HOBBS

Hello Taylor and welcome to my blog! Can you tell me a little about yourself, and how you became an author?
Hello and thank you for having me! A little about me: I live aboard a 38-foot sailboat named Story Time with my husband, baby girl, and dog. We are a military family currently stationed in North Carolina, but love to travel and have plans to cruise the Caribbean in the next few years. I’ve always been a huge reader, but didn’t start writing until 2013. Cloaked is my third novel, but the first one to be published. It’s a dream come true to have made it here!

What is your book about?
Cloaked is a fantasy romance novel. (Read all about it below!)

Who is your heroine? Is she based on someone in real life?
Charlotte is the heroine, but she isn’t based on anyone in real life. There might be a little bit of me in there, or maybe wishful thinking that I could somehow be as cool as she is!

What are your favorite times for writing? Morning? Evening?
I’m at my most creative in the morning with a giant cup of coffee. I try to hit my 1,000 words per day goal before noon. Editing, however, is easiest at night! Maybe because I’m grumpier by the end of the day and have a more critical eye. My favorite spot to edit is up in our cockpit, watching the sun go down with a red pen in my hand.
Who are your favorite authors? Did they influence your writing, and if so, how?
Where to start? I feel like it is an ever-growing list! Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series, and Erika Johansen, author of the Queen of the Tearling series come to mind right now when I think of books that influenced Cloaked. Both authors write strong female characters in memorable settings with a dash of fantasy.

Did you have a favorite book as a child? Did it influence your choice to become an author?
I would have to say Watership Down, given to me by my dad in fourth grade. It was my first ‘grown up’ book, and it showed me how immersive literature could be. I remember being so completely absorbed by the story, and since then I’ve re-read it about five times. It really is a classic. I think it sparked my love of fantasy, so you could say it influenced my choice to write a fantasy romance novel! Unfortunately, there are no talking bunnies in Cloaked.
Thank you for joining me - and now, without further ado -

GENRE: Historical Fantasy Romance

BLURB:   As the Cloaked Shadow, Fawkes has made his career breaking into prisons for any contract with a large enough purse. He takes advantage of the kingdom's impending revolution by playing both sides of the conflict. Each rescue contract he fulfills turns a tidy profit until he angers the wrong duke.

Charlotte is a criminal-in-training who yearns to crack her mentor’s guarded façade, but is unprepared to confront the depths of his dark past. As her sense of right and wrong blurs, Charlotte discovers just how far she will go for the Cloaked Shadow and the sacrifices he requires.

Now hunted throughout the land, Fawkes must face long-buried secrets in order to survive, but they could destroy him. Charlotte risks everything, including her heart, to set Fawkes on the path to redemption.

Will Charlotte have the strength to pull Fawkes into the light, or will she follow him into the shadows?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:  Fawkes’ attack pressed Charlotte backward, and soon they were outside. As Charlotte’s feet slipped in the mud, she realized she had lost her size advantage. Lightning cracked across the sky, illuminating her surroundings long enough to blind her, and she failed to anticipate the next punch. It landed hard on her right shoulder and spun her around.
Before she could steady herself to counter, her arm was wrenched behind her back. Fawkes had a grip on it with one hand, the other around her throat. She stood flush against him, feeling his harsh breath and pounding heart as it beat against her back. They stood like statues, neither one of them wanting to the first to break the spell.
The roar of thunder made her jump and brought them back to reality. “I’ve gotten better, haven’t I?” Charlotte couldn’t help asking. She’d meant it as a quip, but it came out too hopeful.
She felt Fawkes sigh, tensing his hold on her before dropping his grip. With her back still to him, she waited for his answer. Instead, his hand brushed wet hair back from her face before a finger traveled down and traced her jawline. Charlotte leaned into the touch, but then it was gone. She turned to see only darkness, and then a flash of lightning showed his tall frame heading back to the cave.
